 Hot Mulled Wine

1 1/3 cups sugar
2/3 cup water
15 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange
2 cups orange juice
2 bottles (750 ml each) dry red wine
1 orange, halved, seeded, cut into slices,
studded with cloves

In a small saucepan bring sugar, water, cloves, cinnamon sticks,
nutmeg and zests to boil and allow to boil for 5 minutes. Pour the
orange juice and the wine into a large stainless steel pot. Strain in
the sugar mixture. Heat gently until hot. Pour into a serving bowl
and add the clove-studded orange slices.
