Charlie Gibson’s Chocolate Cake
Good Morning America

 “In the late 1940's and early 50's, my mother-in-law was a nurse at a girls' academy in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. (The school no longer exists and
has become a part of Moravian Academy.) During that period, the cook at
the school was named Maud. She had a great chocolate cake recipe with a
secret but simple ingredient -- a cup of coffee! It keeps the cake extremely
moist, but leaves it light at the same time. My wife's family (and now mine)
has been making this recipe for 50 years. The 4" x 6" card for this cake
in our recipe file is covered with flour, butter, and whatnot. It attests to
how often we've made Maud's cake.”

 2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter  
2 eggs
3/4 cup cocoa
Few drops red food coloring
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda dissolved in 1 cup sour milk*
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup hot coffee

Mix ingredients in order given, alternating flour and sour milk. Add
last. Pour batter into prepared 9-inch square pan. Bake in oven
at 350 degrees F. about 1/2 hour.

*You can use buttermilk or add 2 teaspoons vinegar
to 1 cup whole milk.
