Best in the West Bean Bake
Gourmet April 1993

 1 pound ground beef
1 pound bacon, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup bottled barbecue sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup spicy brown mustard
1/4 cup molasses
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground pepper
Two 16-ounce cans red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
Two 16-ounce cans butter beans, rinsed and drained
Two 16-ounce cans pork and beans

Preheat oven to 350ºF.
In an ovenproof kettle cook the beef, bacon, and onion over moderate heat, stirring occasionally to break up any lumps, for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the beef is no longer pink and the bacon is slightly crisp. Transfer the mixture to a sieve and let it drain.
Return the mixture to the kettle, add the ketchup, barbecue sauce, salt, mustard, molasses, chili powder, pepper, and all of the beans. Stir the mixture until it is combined well. Bake the mixture, covered, in the middle of the oven for 1 hour. Serves [8 as a main dish] or 20 as a side dish.
